A3 Atmospheric Forecast Service

Introduction

The A3 Atmospheric service currently allows the generation of meteorological forecasts, using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. Studies can be created by providing input files, including dateset and configuration files. These will then be queued to be computed by a WRF instance, and its outputs can then be download through a study’s detail page.

Inputs

The service requires some input data to generate a forecast. These inputs consist on:

  • Meteorological data of the intended area of the simulation, in the GRIB1 or GRIB2 formats.

  • A Vtable file for the provided GRIB data file

  • 2 configuration files (namelist):
    • The first for the WRF Pre-Processing System;

    • The second for the WRF forecast execution itself.

Alternatively to the GRIB format data files, the user can choose to input the data using two JSON files:

  • One with the configurations for the forecast;

  • And a second one with the data itself.

Both input methods previously mentioned can be used with the NEANIAS File Sharing system, by sharing the files with the service instead of uploading them directly. An example of how to share files with the service and select them when creating a forecast is available here

Outputs

The outputs are available in netCDF and JSON format, along with an initial visualisation of the results with plots saved to a PDF file.
